Sin is before all else an offense against God, a tear in our relationship with God.
The confession of sins, even from a simple point of view, frees us and facilitates our reconciliation with others. Through such an admission man looks squarely at the sins he is guilty of, takes responsibility for them and thereby opens himself again to God and to the communion of the Church in order to make a new future possible.
The Spiritual effects of the Sacrament of Reconciliation are:
reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers grace;
reconciliation with the Church;
remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal sins;
remission, at least in part, of temporal punishment resulting from sin;
peace and serenity of conscience, and spiritual consolation;
an increase of spiritual strength for the Christian battle.
The whole power of this Sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God’s grace and joining us with Him in an intimate friendship.
The Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist – lay the foundations of every Christian life… The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the Sacrament of Confirmation and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life.
At St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the formation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation includes exploring the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the greatest command to love one another in age and situation appropriate ways. Through the understanding of the previous, candidates will begin to understand the importance of a relationship with Jesus and His Church and how sin affects our own relationships and of those around us. At Baptism, parents become the primary example and teacher of the faith for the children. For this reason, parents are integrally involved in the formation process through parent formation sessions and retreats.
Those children who are seven years of age and older and who have not received any formal Catholic instruction need to be enrolled in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children. Please call the Elementary Faith Formation Office at (405) 340-0691 x135 for more information.
